Let me start off by saying, that was the most fun I've had in a long time. The atmosphere of the crowd cheering between each song of the pre-music, eager to get things into motion, the vibe from fans, some lounging on the lawn, others lining up to buy stacks of merch, to a cowboy in a gold sequined suit, who almost stole the show -
Opened by Royal Headache, who although began as fairly intriguing, featuring fast paced guitar, drumming, vocals, everything, fell flat halfway between their set. Though it could be due to not being a fan of their music, it felt as though each song sounded rather similar to the one that preceded, getting old quite quickly. Regardless, the crowd were warmed up and ready to go
When the moment finally arrived, The Black Keys were nothing short of amazing. The raw guitar, the deep drum fills, and the incredible vocal range of Dan Auerbach screamed pure soul. Accompanied by an intense crowd, the set kept getting better and better. With absolute passion within each note played, the pair fed off each others energy and produced a stellar performance, as though it was as fun and exciting as their first time.
Being a seated gig, the crowd had to make due with restraining from jumping off the walls. However, by a change of heart, security had allowed very few to form a tiny mosh beneath the stage, along the barrier...and to my luck, I scored centre spot, right in front of Pat's drumkit. As the night grew, the band just got better. Beginning with upbeat tunes from their last two albums, suddenly slotting in Thickfreakness close to midset, the gig took a nice turn, one definitely for their older, more hardcore fans. With the energy thought to be hitting its peak, nothing slowed down. Song after song, and into Money Maker and Strange Times, the whole crowd were on their feet and dancing. Finishing the set with hits Tighten Up and Lonely Boy, crowd enthused and singing every word back, the set ended on an absolute high.
Well that's what we thought anyway...Here's where the night got intimate, and downright sexy. After drawn out cheers, the band returned to the stage to an electric audience. Let me set the scene. The lights were dimmed to darkness as they geared up. A disco ball fell and an array of blue and green lights which shot from all angles, danced around the entire crowd and set the mood perfectly for Everlasting Light. A sight, a sound, a scene I will never forget. Dan's vocals were the highlight, hitting notes higher than most.
Ending on a high with I Got Mine, the vibe returned to downright bluesy goodness. As the backdrop revealed an illumination of lights spelling out their band name, even by the 20th song, the pair remained just as enthused, soul-filled, and passionate as the 1st song of the night. What more can I say, The Black Keys were everything and more than I expected. A gig I would highly recommend to be attended, and a night that will leave you inspired.
