I hadn't read the play prior to the show and deliberately kept myself in the dark so I could experience it 'fresh'. I managed fairly well, though did have to ask a nearby person who Margaret was during the interval as so far her place in the play hadn't been clearly explained (though it was later and all made sense).
I loved the simplicity of the stage and the evocative use of lighting to portray the heightened emotions in some moments, such as the death of Clarence, when the shadows of the murderers were large against the wall, contrasting with the small shadow of Clarence pleading for his life.
This is clearly not a classical representation of the play but I enjoy classic plays being given a modern context so that the original prose has more meaning for someone young like me who might struggle to understand what's going on.
Kevin Spacey was a spectacular presence on the stage as Richard III, engaging the audience perfectly. I did feel though as if the star on stage was Chuk Iwuji as Buckingham. He drew my eye whenever he was on stage and was very charming and sympathetic.
The play is quite long so I recommend wearing more sensible shoes than I did. I don't begrudge its length as there were quite a few murders to get through by the end!
