We had seen Swan Lake on TV and various documentaries. But watching it live was something else.
The setting in the state theater in Sydney was good. The ballet performance took one through various feelings. We only wish we had known the complete story before hand, in hindsight. The various movements by the main ballerina and the costumes of the pretty girls as Swans transported one into a dream and mythical world. The music of Tchaikovsky was the icing on the cake. Very moving and sits in your head.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. I would highly recommend it for a great evening!

Elegant, romantic and unforgettable. I took my daughter to this production as her first introduction to real ballet. She barely contained herself as she sat humming to the music (Tchaikovsky...everyone knows the score), commenting on the beautiful costumes and totally falling in love with the art of ballet. Beautifully choreographed and adapted for a modern audience, the Imperial Russian Ballet performs beyond expectation.

I went to the ballet on Monday night and if I could ask for a refund I would! Boring scenery, boring dancing, boring dancers and a totally forgettable experience. This reminded me of a school concert, admittedly the dancing was of a higher standard but not by much.

The principle dancers were magnificient, given that there wasn't much space on the stage for the larger moves. The costumes were well done and the stage props were good. I felt that the music was a let down and that it was of poor quality, the amplefication was not adjusted correctly which was a shame. It sound like it was only coming out of the left hand speaker. I thoroughly enjoy the performance and felt that it was well priced so that it was affordable for the whole family to attend, and the ambience of the theatre was perfect for the Russian Imperial Ballet to perform at.

An exceptional traditional performance. The seats of the State Theatre are uncomfortable and the vision could be better but from the moment the curtain rises you are swept away by the powerful music and the breathtaking dancing.

The opening scene as promising - simple stage set. Jesters pracing about on stage. So far so good. My summary - undisciplined dancers sploilt the show. At one point instead of staying in line, one male dancer walked off stage (may be he thought we couldn't see him), at another point instead of maintaining a disciplined gaze into the distance another female 'swan' looked boringly into the audience....
Overall I was really disappointed as I'd taken my daughter to this event as a treat. It's the first ballet where I've left at interval. By the way, why the 2 intervals?

Having seen both the Bolshoi and Leningrad Kirov Swan Lake productions, I was greatly disappointed in the performance on Friday night.
Siegfried's father - all that was missing was a parrot on his shoulder and an eye patch and he would have been dead ringer for a pirate. He walked with a distinct limp and his costume was decidedly "unroyal". He appeared to me to be ungainly and uncomfortable in the role and, to me, bore no ressemblance to a ballet dancer.
I found the choreography mundane.
I was extremely disappointed in the canned music. This is the first time in over 50 years of attending ballets that there hasn't been a live orchestra.
I found the scenery bargain basement and uninspiring.
I found the corps de ballet, with a few exceptions, ordinary, and some members were definitely on the "chunky" side.
Siegfried had a "moment" or two - fluffed a landing and chose not to do the next jump but stood in third position for several seconds.
I treated a friend to the evening as she had never seen a live ballet performance and I had read rave reviews on the internet. My friend certainly enjoyed the ballet, having nothing to compare it with, but was also a little non-plussed at the limping pirate.
I believe the State theatre, while gorgeous, has too small a stage for a production of Swan Lake.

Ballet dancers were fantastic particularly leading female dancer.
The swan costumes were good but other costumes could have used a more regal/royal look.
The stage backing design was poor just using a silk backdrop most of the time.
Curtain raised at the start accidentally before the show.
Was very hot outside that night so the airconditioning could have been stronger.
Overall good performance.

The technical component of the ballet was superb. It was delivered with exact precision. But the performance lacked some emotion and soul.

Despite there being no air-condition in the theatre which made the night slightly uncomfortable, the performance of the ballet was graceful & very enjoyable. The lead swan was both beautiful and a very skillful dancer which was absolutely amazing to watch. The stage was too small for this ballet and at times it seemed half the performance took place halfway off the stage. Music would have been so much better had there been a love orchestra, but overall a nice experience.

This was my second time at the ballet so I am not a ballet expert but I thought these dancers, particularly the ballerina who danced Odette/Odile, were terrific. The principal ballerina was so captivating and expressive whilst making the athleticism look effortless as did the male dancer, especially the lifts. The four dancers who danced together didn't put a foot wrong. What a perfect venue. As with all events such as this the toilet queue was too long and it was a little stuffy. Would have liked a real orchestra but that may not have been possible. Very affordable, thankyou.
On the whole my daughters and I were so excited to be there and what a chance to frock up.

The only thing that saved this production from being a total flop was the lead ballerina who was excellent. Her technique and grace were amazing. The rest of the cast danced like amateurs. The lead males' elevation was astounding in that there was none. Would I go see the Imperial Russian Ballet again? Sure, but I would have to be paid to go as well as shouted dinner at a five star restaurant..

The ballet was sooo beautiful. But it is best appreciated by viewers who are already familiar with the story. If not, you should have $15 ready to get the story line through the programme. (Also, be ready w/ extra shots of caffeine during intermission ... it does tend to be dragging.)
Nevertheless, it was fantastic. The evening gives the viewer a sense of "culture". Truly, an unforgettable event. The Imperial Russian Ballet is so far the best.

I promised myself long ago that one day I would see "Swan Lake", especially in a version performed by a Russia ballet company. So on the 20/09/09 I watched a performance together with my husband.
I had tears in my eyes, I was so moved by the grace and beauty of the dancers as well as the beautiful music by Tchaikovsky. It was a superb performance, very enjoyable and touching, such a pleasure to watch. The beautiful program that I purchased is a reminder of a wonderful experience.

Being the second time I have seen Swan Lake, this time was always going to be compared to the first, and therefore, starting off in the shadows. When the English Ballet came to Sydney in '99 and performed their Swan Lake at the Entertainment Centre, I thought nothing would outshine it, but this more intimate production of Swan Lake was as good, if even better, despite the lack of a live orchestra.
The Russian performers were perfect and the atmosphere of the State Theatre all worked together to create an unforgettable experience - perfect for a birthday, which this was for me.
