Actually was disappointed. The highlight of the evening for us was the young guy who sang before Seal - Michael Paynter. We thought he was a real talent.
Seal didn't make the most of his two most well known songs: Crazy and Kiss from a Rose. The only ever got momentum and hit any sort of crecsendo during Crazy and there was no lead up to that feeling, nor nothing after - it just came crashing down. The two guys that supported him were very good/talented and worked in well, but the backing vocals to support Seal should have been stronger. The women horn section were great, but again, lost opportunities. They were off stage alot of the time. I get they were there for the soul songs, but why couldn't they have been backing vocalists throughtout.
The young guy on bass and piano is talented, but there was a point at which his key board was over powering Seal's voice on one song - sounded great if you wanted to profile him only, but Seal was fighting against it and that wasn't the objective me thinks.
Also Seal spent far too much time being intimate with the front rows/people lucky enough to be in the stalls. Us poor suckers in the mezzanine had to be content with being voyeurs to what was for all intents and purposes, something in which they weren't involved. State theatre should make it clear when you're booking tickets that you'll be sitting on your butt all night, without the ability to groove.
Not good all up - saw Sting in the same venue a few years ago - left this for dead in terms of production, humour, working with the audience. Even Donny Osmond was a better entertainer.!
