Favourite moment: Richard Gill involved the audience - warmly, and made classical music available to the ears of all the audience, regardless of musical persuasion. @

I took my 11 year old daughter to the MSO ears wide open at Hamer Hall on Tuesday 7th July. What an amazing event. The way that Richard Gill was able to bring the story of compostion alive was captivating to say the least.
I highly recommend anyone with an interst in music to go along to see Ears Wide Open next time around. It gives you the opportunity to see the construction, and in a way the deconstruction of a music peice.
The consumate professionals of the MSO played a piece of music, under the baton of Richard Gill who took us on a journey of how the piece was contstructed, with the musicians dutifully playing section by section the piece to us, as it's structure was explained. This then culmintaed in a second full hearing of the piece, at which my daughter was astounded at how different it sounded, as now her ears were wide open.

This performance, conducted and 'narrated' by Richard Gill, was a true ear-opener. My 13-year old son and I were entranced throughout the performance. Richard and the orchestra played the entire piece (Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis) then walked the audience through it bit by bit, describing and playing all the components. Each layer was peeled back then re-constructed in its entirety one last time. It was then that we truly heard the music - it was revelatory. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys classical music but has a limited understanding of its structure, wants to broaden their appreciation of composers and/or has young adults studying music. It was a fantastic experience enhanced by the affordable price (notwithstanding the car park fees at the Arts centre - more than the price of my son's ticket).

I would like some audience interaction with the conductor.
The program was very good and a great performance was given by all.
