I took my 11 year old daughter to the MSO ears wide open at Hamer Hall on Tuesday 7th July. What an amazing event. The way that Richard Gill was able to bring the story of compostion alive was captivating to say the least.
I highly recommend anyone with an interst in music to go along to see Ears Wide Open next time around. It gives you the opportunity to see the construction, and in a way the deconstruction of a music peice.
The consumate professionals of the MSO played a piece of music, under the baton of Richard Gill who took us on a journey of how the piece was contstructed, with the musicians dutifully playing section by section the piece to us, as it's structure was explained. This then culmintaed in a second full hearing of the piece, at which my daughter was astounded at how different it sounded, as now her ears were wide open.

This performance, conducted and 'narrated' by Richard Gill, was a true ear-opener. My 13-year old son and I were entranced throughout the performance. Richard and the orchestra played the entire piece (Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis) then walked the audience through it bit by bit, describing and playing all the components. Each layer was peeled back then re-constructed in its entirety one last time. It was then that we truly heard the music - it was revelatory. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys classical music but has a limited understanding of its structure, wants to broaden their appreciation of composers and/or has young adults studying music. It was a fantastic experience enhanced by the affordable price (notwithstanding the car park fees at the Arts centre - more than the price of my son's ticket).

I would like some audience interaction with the conductor.
The program was very good and a great performance was given by all.

This was a superb concert overall, with an appreciative and excited audience. Whilst the initial piece- Faure's exquisite and serene Requiem- was wonderfully executed by the MSO Chorus, it lacked the power and intensity from a choir which seemed to be signficantly depleted in numbers, especially amongst the men. It would seem that the reputed cull of the MSO Chorus has been too savage which is disappointing. However, the exciting Saint Saens Organ symphony was the crowning glory and unforgettable, indeed the best rendition I have ever heard! The orchestral colour and intensity met the fire and brilliance of the wonderful Town Hall organ, expertly conducted by Richard Gill.

Was very entertaining and kept my son's interest. Could have had seating for everyone, as sitting amongst others was a tad distracting at times. Well done MSO. There needs to be more of these concerts.

The MSO family classic kids concert was great as an introduction to symphonies and the various instruments. The MC and conducter did a great job of getting participation from the audience and the kids. The MSO of course were great and the sound was fantastic.
The only issue was that the show only went for 45 minutes which was way too short.
A suggestion for the MSO....... With many kids these days brought up on Disney, Dreamworks ect, you could try playing more up to date tunes...twinkle twinkle whilst a classic doesn't cut it. The harp player playing the sesame street was more in tune with modern day kids.

Just Brilliant. My 4 & 5 year old girls were literally on the edges of their seats. They loved it! What a perfect way to introduce kids to an awsome orchestra. My eldest now wants to learn the violin and the youngest the golden harp. Incidentally the harpist rocked! She was outta this world! The Spokesperson was perfect - does he do birthday parties? he he My husband who had never witnessed a live orchestra before thought it was excellent! Well done.... I'm still telling people about it. We'll worth the 2 hours drive to Melbourne. Thank you all.

The kids loved it - their only complaint was it was too short! The MSO were very engaging and looked like they were having as much fun as the audience, which made them seem so more accessible than the austere of a black tie performance. Well done and let's have more!

This symphony was divine. Bartok's piece and the first piece were superseded by the pure emotional majesty of Tchaikovsky's Pathetique. The emotional impact of Tchaikovshy's piece was unlike any other.
Strongly suggest the attendance of all people regardless of all pre-conceived notions of classical / emotive symphonies.

Having never been to the Hamer Hall before I was stunned by the wonderful accoustics,
the word that kept coming onto my head was that the MSO"created such a "sweet" sound I wanted to close my eyes to listen but wanted to watch the orchestra too What a delemna!. I was thrilled that the Australian public went out of itscomfort zone by voting for the Dvorark, and even more thrilled that it I had voted for. The organ was magnificant, and yes the crescendo in the Saint Sans was my favourite moment. I was particularly impressed by the strings and oboe playing. In all a special evening.

The show was superb.
As always, Mary and Emma did a magnificent job, and Graham is a fantastic conductor.
The MSO outshone themselves.
I hope that future countdowns continue to have this final event - next time I would take friends with me.
I loved it!

Even though I picked Dvorak 9th as my third best loved, (Beethoven's fifth forever) I thoroughly enjoyed the whole night. The MSO was as allways fantastic and as for our ladies presenters well they looked good and had the audience at times in stitches" no organ jokes indeed". in all a great night and will recommend it to my friends for next time.

Event was looked forward to with great anticipation after 8 days of counting down Australia's favourite symphonies on ABC Classic FM. Most people were expecting which 5 symphonies were to be performed although their exact order was not certain until we had heard one movement from each of number 5 down to 2 before interval. Then it became clear that Dvorak Symphony no.9 "From the New World" came out on top and was performed in its entirety after interval. And what a performance it was! The Melbourne Symphony gave of its best.

Concert excellent, enjoyed it. Having Emma and Mary as hosts of the evening was great, they did a really good job. Graeme Abbott was also excellent.
The MSO did not seem at their very best, except for the first piece, the Dvorak, and Wilma wasn't there.
The other pieces weren't quite as precise. I usually sit in the stalls, and this time, in the balcony I noticed the sound quality was not as good. (Obviously, nothing to do with the night's presentation, but rather the venue acoustics.)

My husband thoroughly enjoyed the concert as he is a musician.
My friend and I always appreciate the talent of both the Melbourne Symphony 0rchestra and James Morrison, but we were disappointed that we did not hear music that we recognized; even after interval.
We felt the title "Swing, Swing, Swing" was misleading, as it was not swing as we know it. We wondered if others in the audience felt the same as we did.
I would only recommend this event to a friend who could understand the music.
Thank you.
