The Greek tragicomedy was a favourite of the ancients. Bell Shakespeare's production of a classic tale is as appealing to us in the 21st century as it surely was in the past.
The performances were excellent. The cast members who had multiple roles to play were wonderful and the dialogue was handled magnificently.
The audience as a whole appeared to laugh in the right spots and to hold our collective breaths where appropriate.
John Gaden is a consummate Shakespearean actor who delivered a wonderful performance as our storyteller and courtier times two. As Gower, he is our glue, keeping it all together. Sublime.
Julie Goss has a lot of fun. From being the jealous Dionyza, through to our madame, Bawd, she appears to enjoy playing up to the other characters - and the audience - and does it very well.
Marcus Graham as Pericles brings a modern approach to the dialogue which worked quite well. There are not many scenes that he is not in, and with John Gaden, has a lot of dialgue to remember and master. A job well done.
Enough on characters - the set, costuming and music was just stunning. I loved the eastern theme (which worked very well with Marina's brief career as a prostitute and the travellers looking for a good time.) which was perfected by the music. TaikOz brought the whole thing together with their sublime performance which fitted into the performance seemlessly.
