First experience at the Big Day out and what an awesome one it was. I had heard so much hype about this annual event I thought I should give it a go and when I heard the line up for 2010 I knew I had to try for tickets. After the intial disappointment I was successful for the second day in Sydney! As we drove to our accommodation on the Fri we listened to the Friday coverage on Triple J and the heat was a concern as Sat was going to be worse.
We organised ourselves with plenty of water and were in the first 50 throught the gates. The whole experience was a visual and auditory smorgasboard- memories that will last forever. The crowds were an ecclectic mix of young, old and those that fell somewhere in between- myself and the hubby included. Everything was extremely well organised and I was especially surprised with the quality and variety of food on offer. But we had come for the bands and to start it off we listened to the etherial sounds of Lisa Mitchell- a great Aussie musician with a very unique sound. Hill Top Hoods and Blue Juice were amazing and I sympathised with their acts as the heat continued to climb but it didnt dampen their enthusiasm on stage. Dizzy Rascal had a huge sea of people moving to his grooves and the sight of many thousands writhing in unison was one I will never forget. The only band we didnt get to see was Kisschassey as the heat was just too mush for us so we retreated to the silent disco- WHOA what a weird experience and the Visual feasts of Lilly's world. Great for a giggle! Lots of water, many trips through the spray tunnel were what was needed to keep the body going through the heat. For me Kasabian were an unknown band but I am a convert who thoroughly enjoyed their sound and have since purchsed 2 of their CD's. Eskimo Joe with a quick appearance by Iva Davies were just fabulous as was the mighty Powderfinger. We merged with the many other thousans to listen to the cataclismic sounds of MUSE and I definitely wasn't disappointed. Those 3 boys made some welcome noise for a very eager crowd. The day ended with some fab fireworks to mark the 100th show and our 3 hr drive home. I am a convert and will make the Big Day out an annual event. Where else can us Aussies catch such a diverse range of acts at one time- Thank you to the organisers and everyone involved- I LOVED IT!!!!!!

To think, these days the average gig costs around $140 to get in to, and generally you are there to see one headline act, and one supporting artist, who sometimes, is not even worthy of the title "artist". And then along comes festival season and the BDO sees you pining over the schedule days in advance and planning out your day. Which artists are you going to have to compromise on? Lady Hawke or Powderfinger. How are you going to last the whole day? Get there a little later? But miss Lisa Mitchell and Kasabian?
This year's concert was a big-name bonanza. Lily, Lisa, Passion Pit, The Horrors…artists from near and far pulled out all stops on the nation's big day at Flemington Racecourse. But the sounds and moves from UK rockers Kasabian and MUSE were without doubt, highlights of the day. Kasabian wooed the crown with hits from their earlier release Empire and their latest album West Rider Lunatic Pauper Asylum. Fire, Fast Fuse and Vlad the Impaler from the latter got the crowd rocking, but it was Shoot the Runner from their earlier album that had everyone singing along with fierce determination. The music was unreal, the crowd enthusiastic and the band, well, true dignitaries. There is nothing like chugging back a beer on stage to get a roar from an Aussie-crowd.
Final act on the main stage was MUSE. Being their only Melbourne show, all MUSE fans came out in full force for their 80 minute set. The wait as Powderfinger played on the opposite stage was long but not at all painful, as hits such as These Days and My Happiness had the crowd swaying and reflecting on the day that was dawning to a close. Some committed devotes must have shunned a number of other acts playing the smaller stages to lay a stake in their spot as close to the stage as possible. Finally, as the sun was starting to go down, the mini-concert erupted with a sound and light spectacular. MUSE did not disappoint. The sound was like the record, but better, a tell-tale sign of an experienced music act. Then, just when the crowd thought "this cannot get any better", out came Jet front man, Nic Cester, to sing a cover of AC/DC's Back in Black. The stage was rocking, the crowd were jumping, the set clearly the success of the day.

Maybe im being picky or maybe im just gettn old but this was my first ever Big Day Out and possibly my last shame because the day itself, from gettn ready with friends at home BBQ n drinks, taking shameless threatning facebook photos, people watching, finding randoms who need friends because they lost the ones they came with lol, arranging meeting points and of course arguing over who to see....
For years i've had to work every BDO and watch friends go, review the day amongst each other disagreeing on who played the best set, got the most wasted or lucky enough to meet members from bands. Yes i have waited a long time to join the BDO die hards and finally it was my turn, it was to be a cracking day with 30+ soring heat
although i had read the line up i walked in and felt as though the Royal Easter Show meets a festival, loads of carnny action and children running amok.
Apart from the acts themself i have no problems but i always expected well i thought that BDO prides itself on getting some of the best bands from all walks of life. My genre of music is wide actually i really dont have a particular genre that i listen too i really enjoy hearing new styles im always open to different music. I wanted to here bands, i expected there to be local bands randomly playing inbetween the big boys, acoustic solos more 10yrs ago and a little less of the crowd pleasers we see at festivals threw out summer.
Bands, big bands, small bands, un heard of bands, i still enjoyed seeing the line up maybe think about past BDOs who headlined then or even the best one so far. I enjoy going to festivals to see overseas acts and watch them in person thats whats good about a festival so going to BDO should be sepeart from these.
Bring BDO back to the days when it was about this music, i did'nt hate my experience and i might have repeated myself, just a little dissapointed that i saw
dizzee rascal, lilly allen, hill top hoods, girl talk, groove armada all at a festival of some type in the past (not complaining they are all wicked )
I really enjoyed Rise Against it was the first time i had ever seen them live awesome and i was done after i saw Peaches act hot dam she made the crowd loose it.
I wont go on any more i think i made my point and i understand the hard work that goes into organising an event like this, thanks for taking the time to read my review.

Well I've gotta give it to em', the line up was amazing. I listened to bands that I was never really that interested in but when I heard them live I was pretty, well astonished.
But I was disappointed because some of the bands that I went there for I couldnt see, barely hear. Their was way too many people there to enjoy the end of the day, they sold too many tickets, lines were too long, at times it took me 10 minutes to move a couple metres and I was at the back.

Again the BDO lived up to expectations. It ran like clockwork, the organisers had everything dialled and the bands earned their mula with exceptional style. The only reason I cant give the BDO a five star rating is the amount of people in the venue, but I suppose thats what makes it what it is! Fighting with 1000's of people cramming to see their favourite band and getting a sick spot... ahh bugger it I'm giving 5! Bring on Laneway.

Once again the BDO proved to be the best festival in Australia. Flemington racecourse is an ideal venue...spacious, comfortable, lots of shade and grass, close to city. Muse were awesome. Other amazing bands included The Decemberists, Crayon Fields and the Passion Pit. Forget about the breaking in at Mark Kavanagh's stables...they were not BDO revellers just thieves trying to get in for free.

Been to quite a few BDO and this one was sensational, the acts were all awesome, Lily, Hilltops, Grinspoon and Calvin and to finish off with Groove Armada was brilliant. Lots of male toilets made it easy a, Maybe more still for girls though and hardly any line ups for drinks.
